Europe’s cities and regions share a direct responsibility for Europe beyond their local and regional activities. We have specific experience working with cities engaged with the European Capitals of Culture programme, advocating for its future development as a fully participatory process. We also believe that the potential of Europe’s peripheries must be given more attention, encouraging the rest of Europe to engage with their varied perspectives and learn from their experiences.
Europe’s citizens and its institutions have a common responsibility to support culture both within and beyond Europe’s borders. It is essential to develop both the role of culture in democracy and the role of Europe at the global level.
The origin of the initiative’s work is the belief that positive changes for Europe can only be achieved by engaging citizens in new forms of active citizenship.
